Dr. Markus is an Austin native. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from The University of Texas at Austin in 1986 and his M.D. from UT Southwestern, Dallas in 1990. By 1995 he completed General Surgery training starting at The University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville and then Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, Lubbock. He has been a Diplomat of The American Board of Surgery since receiving his Board certification in 1996 and is currently Board Certified in General Surgery.

In 1995 he joined Surgical Associates of Austin and currently serves as President. Additionally he served in the medical staff leadership of South Austin Medical Center since 1999 as Chief of Surgery, Chief of Staff, and Member of the Board of Trustees. He is a clinical instructor of Surgery for Texas A & M College of Medicine and Texas State University School of Nursing.

Medical society memberships include the Travis County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, and he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Markus has been named to the Texas Monthly Magazine list of “SuperDoctors” annually since 2004 and to the Austin Monthly Magazine Top Doctor listing.

A large part of Dr. Markus’ practice and a special area of interest is in the diagnosis and treatment of benign breast conditions and breast cancer for the best oncologic and cosmetic results possible. This includes image guided biopsies, SAVI brachytherapy partial breast radiation catheter placement, lumpectomy, intraoperative lumpectomy margin assessment, and mastectomy. An equally important part of his practice includes advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery as well as repair of all types of hernias.

In addition to spending his free time with his family, his hobbies and interests include hunting, hiking national parks, bicycling, and drawing portraits.
